Mary Weatherford
"Mary Weatherford: Red Hook"
2015
http://www.brennangriffin.com/artists/mary-weatherford

"Produced over the past two years, the works on view—literally luminous abstract compositions—can be seen as following the course of a day, from sunrise to sunset, in the midst of an industrial urban setting. The colors and textures of the works indicate the shifting light, atmosphere and mood that she observed during her visit. The allover compositions contain exuberant brushstrokes that never quite reach the edges of the canvas, which are typically left blank. A thin tube or two of neon lighting, usually oriented vertically or horizontally, punctuate each canvas, the wiring and transformer plainly visible." (David Ebony, Art in America)

After reviewing the provided work, spend 5 minutes on a free sketch.  Think about things that you see during your day.  Think about things that you see at specific times of day as the day progresses.  It is not important what you are sketching but that you spend the entire time drawing.

"I definitely think I live vicariously through my art, and through these characters am able to express my deepest ambitions, desires, fantasies and fears.  I believe that everyone at some point in their lives has to deal with an inner struggle, and that this universe is perfectly designed to offer human being the optimal condition under which the choice between good and evil can be made.  My drawings depict my struggles and joys manifested through these casts of character.  My characters are self portraits.  I am a Who rider, I am a Lizard man." -David Jien

"Mike Cloud lays it on thick—in his paint application and in his symbolism. Layers of chunky oil paint covered every inch of canvas in the nine works on view. Jewish stars, blood diamonds, the Confederate flag and at least one Swastika mixed and mingled with coffins, genitals, detached hands and feet and painted statements about impotence. Cloud staples canvas to the inside of stretchers, instead of stretching around them, so all the pieces are “framed.” His conspicuous brushstrokes, often roughly the width of a human finger, emphasize the directness of a body’s forceful, persistent touch." (Becky Brown, Art in America, Jan. 2015)

Photographs can bear witness to a definitive moment in history or even serve as a catalyst for change. They can foster sympathy and awareness or, alternatively, offer critical commentary on an historical figure or event. The photographers discussed here aim to wordlessly capture the essence of events they witnessed—though the question of accuracy is always up for debate." (MoMA, Photography as Witness)

"No title is more apt than along the way.  Ever since Brooklyn-based artist KAWS transformed his creative output from the streest into one of the most exciting hybrid careers of pop-culture appeal and fine art evolution, he has been at the forefront of expanding the dialogue of what contemporary art can be.  He has long had the knack for making his work larger than life, whether by sheer physical scale, or positioning the work in places where mass audience is the instrument impelling the chorus forward." -Juxtapoz September 2015

Shinro Ohtake: Queer, 1985, found objects, ink, printed matter, gouache and paper on cardboard, 13⅝ by 8¾ inches; at Parasol Unit.

"Picture a profusion of colorful detritus caking frames, boxes and hand-built wooden structures. Imagine, then, that all this detritus manifests the play of littered streets, encounters in Hawaii, the belch and screech of electric guitars, the buzz of insects. Introduce into the scene a sequence of quieter things—abstract works on paper made with gouache and plaster and resembling corroding metal; quasi-architectural wall panels made with paraffin and trussed with cellophane tape; a rectangular black wall piece that smells of a rustic cottage mixed with the reek of a painters’ studio." -Prajna Desai on Sinro Ohtake

Is there an aspect of this collage that you fell can help guide the artistic choices you are making in your own collange?
